  • The pipeline length is 1768km in total length.
  • The diameter of the pipeline is 42 inches.
  • BTC’s throughput capacity is currently 1.2 million barrels per day.
  • The BTC pipeline facilities include: Eight pump stations (two in Azerbaijan, two in Georgia, four in Türkiye),one pressure reduction station, two intermediate pigging stations, 101 block valves.

South Caucasus pipeline

In the first quarter of 2022, the SCP spent around $14 million in operating expenditure and around $0.3 million in capital expenditure in total. The SCP has been operational since late 2006, transporting Shah Deniz gas to Azerbaijan, Georgia and Türkiye.

Western Route Export pipeline

The length of this pipeline - 829 km WREP facilities include:

  • Six pump stations (three in Azerbaijan, three in Georgia)
  • BTC’s throughput capacity is currently 1.2 million barrels per day.
  • Two pressure reduction stations located in Georgia
  • 59 block valves with check valves along the pipeline
  • One intermediate pigging station in Azerbaijan and one at each station.

The Western Route Export Pipeline (WREP) transports crude oil from offshore oil fields in the Caspian Sea to the Black Sea, from where the crude is further shipped via tankers through the Bosporus to European markets.

In the first quarter of 2022, BTC spent about $9 million in operating expenditure and about $4 million in capital expenditure. On 23 March 2022, BTC reached a significant milestone by loading the 5000th tanker of oil transported from the Sangachal terminal near Baku across Azerbaijan, Georgia and Türkiye to Ceyhan. Since the 1,768 km BTC pipeline became operational in June 2006 till the end of the first quarter of 2022, it carried a total of 3.82 billion barrels (more than 509 million tonnes) of crude oil loaded on 5,007 tankers and sent to world markets.
On 11 August 2014, BTC celebrated the loading of the 2 billionth barrel of oil at the Ceyhan terminal in Türkiye. The BTC pipeline passes through 13 districts in Azerbaijan: Garadagh, Absheron, Hajigabul, Agsu, Kurdamir, Ujar, Agdash, Yevlakh, Goranboy, Samukh, Shemkir, Tovuz, Agstafa; 7 in Georgia and 9 in Türkiye. In the first quarter, around 51 million barrels (about 6.7 million tonnes) of BTC-exported crude oil was lifted at Ceyhan loaded on 68 tankers. The BTC pipeline currently carries mainly ACG crude oil and Shah Deniz condensate from Azerbaijan. In addition, other volumes of the Caspian regional crude oil and condensate continue to be transported via BTC.
The diameter of BTC the pipeline is 42 inches throughout most of Azerbaijan and Türkiye. In Georgia the pipeline diameter is 46 inches. The pipeline diameter reduces to 34-inches for the last downhill section to the Ceyhan Marine Terminal in Türkiye. Throughput capacity – one million barrels per day from March 2006 to March 2009. Since March 2009 it has been expanded to 1.2 million barrels per day by using drag reducing agents (DRAs).
